The Scout Who Rode Ahead: Awareness Sees What Technology Can't

This Is NOT About Technology: The Scout Who Rode Ahead

Yesterday, we met the merchants of the Silk Road.

They traveled together.

Shared their supplies.

Protected one another.

But there was another person in every successful caravan.

The scout.

He rarely carried the treasure.

He wasn't the strongest fighter.

Most travelers probably never noticed him.

His job was simply to ride ahead.

To look beyond the next hill.

To notice what others couldn't yet see.

Sometimes he returned with good news.

Sometimes he returned with difficult news.

Either way, the caravan was better prepared because someone had gone first.

That story stayed with me when I read today's cybersecurity news.

Researchers are reporting that cybercriminals are becoming faster, more organized, and increasingly using artificial intelligence to improve phishing attacks and automate their operations.

Many articles focus on the technology.

I found myself thinking about the scout.

Not because the world has become more dangerous.

But because the value of seeing early has never changed.

Perhaps that's why the most resilient businesses rarely wait for problems to appear.

They ask questions before something goes wrong.

They review.

They practice.

They prepare.

Not because they expect the worst.

Because they value having options.

At MicroAge Richmond, that's one reason we spend so much time talking with our clients.

Quarterly reviews.

Security awareness discussions.

Backup verification.

Business continuity planning.

Those conversations may not feel exciting.

Neither did watching the horizon from the front of a caravan.

Until the day it mattered.

So here's the question I've been asking myself today.

Who is riding ahead for your business?

Not who fixes problems.

Who helps you notice them while there is still time to choose your response?

Technology changes.

Human nature changes very little.

Perhaps that's why stories from hundreds of years ago still have something to teach us.

Not about technology.

About awareness.

Strong businesses are built on awareness.

Awareness creates stability.

Stability allows growth to become intentional.

If you'd like to explore how your business prepares for what lies ahead, we'd be happy to have that conversation.

Technology helps. Awareness protects.
