This Is NOT About Technology: The 91st Minute

The 91st Minute

Over the past few weeks, I've found myself watching more of the FIFA World Cup.

Like every World Cup, there have been unforgettable goals, incredible saves, passionate fans, and plenty of debate. Some people focus on the referees, others on VAR, and others on the decisions that changed a match. That's part of football, and part of what makes it so enjoyable.

But while watching, I found myself paying attention to something else.

The clock.

There is something special about the 91st minute.

When the board goes up and stoppage time is announced, nobody assumes the match is over. Players keep pressing. Coaches keep encouraging. Fans stay on the edge of their seats because everyone knows a single minute can change the outcome.

That made me wonder.

What would one extra minute mean in a business?

Not another hour.

Not another employee.

Just one more minute.

One more minute to return an important phone call.

One more minute to notice something that didn't look quite right.

One more minute to follow up with a customer.

One more minute to stop reacting and start thinking.

Watching Cristiano Ronaldo reminded me of something else.

Even one of the greatest goal scorers in football history depends on the people around him. A brilliant striker still needs teammates who see the opportunity, make the pass, and put him in the right position.

Business isn't very different.

None of us succeeds entirely on our own.

Behind every growing business are people who help create opportunities. A coach who asks a better question. An accountant who notices something in the numbers. A lawyer who helps avoid a costly mistake. A trusted advisor who brings a different perspective.

Perhaps success isn't about trying to do everything ourselves.

Perhaps it's about surrounding ourselves with people who help us make the most of every minute.

Looking back over the past few weeks, I realized something.

We've talked about the king's seal.

The real door.

The empty chest.

The unanswered phone.

The empty chair.

Each story was different, but they all pointed in the same direction.

Awareness.

Sometimes awareness helps us avoid a problem.

Sometimes it helps us notice an opportunity.

And sometimes it quietly gives us back something we thought we had lost.

Time.

As I continue watching the World Cup, I'll probably celebrate another great goal.

But I'll also be thinking about the 91st minute.

Because sometimes one extra minute changes everything.

If your business feels like it's constantly running out of time, don't begin by asking which technology to buy.

Begin by asking where your time is quietly disappearing.

Sometimes the answer is a better process.

Sometimes it's a trusted conversation.

Sometimes technology can help.

But awareness comes first.

Strong businesses are built on awareness.

Awareness gives you time. Time gives you choices.

Technology helps. Awareness protects.
